evaluations

5-foot-10, 180 pounds. C/1B/RF. Bats L/R. Throws R. Very athletic (watch his workout video!). 1.81 pop. Quick transfer. Works with former MLB catcher. Reads ball well to keep in front when blocking. Excellent at working with pitchers (tracks batter’s tendencies to help pitcher decide what to throw and where). Working on arm strength. Hits ball hard from both sides of the plate. More comfortable batting left. Good hip turn and balance with power potential. Short, compact swing. Usually No. 4 or 5 hitter. Exit velo likely 90+ mph (last tested at 84 mph 1.5 years ago). Team leader. Strong work ethic (practices every day, works out at gym, watches videos). Strives to be the best he can be. Loves to work out. Self-driven. Does workouts at 4:30 a.m. on his own. Good student (3.58 GPA). Bilingual (English/Spanish). Speaks English very well.

MESSAGE FROM GABRIEL

My name is Gabriel Nieves, and I am a switch-hitting catcher (1.81 pop, 90+ exit velocity) in the class of 2021. I can also play first base and right field. My height is 5-10, and I weigh 180 pounds. I currently attend Cupeyville School in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with a 3.58 GPA and 1000 SAT score. I am a driven person that works extremely hard to achieve all my goals in life.

I’m always striving to get better by listening to my coaches’ and trainers’ advice. I could be at my very best and I would still be wanting to get better and reach another level. My work ethic and leadership are special, as I was named captain of my varsity team. I practice with my team two times a week, go to the gym twice a week, and also have hitting clinics twice. On top of that, I practice every day (before or after team practice) or go to the gym. I work out with my trainer for an hour and a half, with the days divided by different parts of the body (torso, upper body, lower body, chest and sled day).

In the classroom, I am driven the exact same way I am for baseball. Right now I am taking AP Biology. My school was ranked #1 by Middle States in 2018. As a result of studying in a school like this, I’ve had many opportunities to help my community and become a greater leader. After hurricane Maria in 2017, I volunteered to clean up my community. I helped organize the school sport tournaments. Also, I helped a foundation called SER, which works with kids who have autism and other incapacities. I want you to know that my dream is to get my college degree, become a professional, and on the way become the best baseball player I can be. I promise I will work extremely hard and make your university proud. Thank you for taking the time to learn about me, and I hope we can talk soon.
